I’ve been thinking a lot about John Abercrombie the past few days since hearing of his passing. At a difficult and formative stage in my twenties (difficult and formative seem to often go together, don’t they?) John helped me a lot through his great artistry, his generosity, compassion, warm friendship, honesty and encouragement. We also recorded an album’s worth of duets. I haven’t listened to the music we recorded back then for many years. I was not at his level and was struggling and, although John played beautifully, as he always seemed to, I was dissatisfied with my playing, so decided not to publish any of it. I’d like to share some of that music now, for the first time. It’s a piece we named Concierge Des Rêves – a fancy way to say Janitor of Dreams, according to John.
