THE PASSING OF GUITARIST JOHN ABERCROMBIE

I’ve been thinking a lot about John Abercrombie the past few days since hearing of his passing. At a difficult and formative stage in my twenties (difficult and formative seem to often go together, don’t they?) John helped me a lot through his great artistry, his generosity, compassion, warm friendship, honesty and encouragement. We also recorded an album’s worth of duets. I haven’t listened to the music we recorded back then for many years. I was not at his level and was struggling and, although John played beautifully, as he always seemed to, I was dissatisfied with my playing, so decided not to publish any of it. I’d like to share some of that music now, for the first time. It's a piece we named Concierge Des Rêves - a fancy way to say Janitor of Dreams, according to John.

BIRD IS THE WORM RECOMMENDS CLOSER TO THE SUN

"There’s so much spirit in this music. It’s full of life, and delivers it with a heart-on-the-sleeve sincerity...expressed on his drums and his newest album Closer to the Sun. It’s unleashed with every kind of ferocity there is, and yet by honoring the importance of a well-crafted melody, Kiermyer’s quartet brings each song home to something familiar, a lyrical guidepost of what’s being said and how the conversation is rolled out. You can’t go wrong with this one."

FK INTERVIEWED IN AUGUST, 2015 ISSUE OF NEW YORK CITY JAZZ RECORD

by John Pietaro

Franklin Kiermyer’s tom-toms thunder across the room as metallic shimmers slice the air, at once rapturous, restless and uncompromising. His limbs dancing over the drumkit, Kiermyer becomes entranced in the music about him, playing a rolling, swinging, free rhythm that speaks as much about the history of jazz drumming as it does the avant school with which he has become associated.

FK INTERVIEWED ON THE JAKE FEINBERG SHOW

by Jake Feinberg

...He feels completely at peace when he's playing. He might be churning out patterns of hyperbolic rhythms but he is in his yogic state...you need to burn and go beyond the atmosphere because we will be leaving this planet for other worlds. Playing music of the soul is not for the faint of heart...he is not content with being static.

ALL ABOUT JAZZ ARTICLE ONE OF THEIR TOP 15 MOST READ INTERVIEWS OF 2014

FURTHER REVIEWED IN CITIZEN JAZZ - FRANCE

by Denis Desassis

"Le quartet impose le respect et hisse haut les couleurs d’un jazz dont on finit par ne plus savoir s’il appartient au passé ou s’il continue de vivre au présent. Non seulement Franklin Kiermyer est un batteur à la très forte présence, un technicien du foisonnement, mais il est entouré de musiciens qui parlent la même langue et partagent un même élan spirituel. Leur chant choral mérite l’attention"

THIRD GUEST ARTICLE IN CANADIAN MUSICIAN

THE SPIRIT OF DRUMMING - INTENTION by Franklin Kiermyer

"In music, like everything else, result follows intention. What you are trying to do defines your actions and your actions create the result. In other words, great things don’t usually happen by accident. It’s also true that the more we understand why we are trying to do something, the more likelihood we’ll accomplish it. That’s because the real power of intention is activated by feeling righteous about your motivation."

FURTHER REVIEWED IN TANDEM WITH NEW AZAR LAWRENCE ALBUM IN JAZZTIMES

by Thomas Conrad

"Further is more unified and wilder. No genre of art stays new forever, but some forms are permanently revolutionary, such as the sublime sonic tempests of late Coltrane. It is the Coltrane of albums like Meditations to which Further pays tribute. Kiermyer’s drumming is maniacal, a continuous catharsis."
